AGE GROUP : 16 – 18 YEARS OLD
This course builds on the knowledge and skills developed at GCSE, introducing students to the discipline of advanced literary study. Learners read a range of poetry, prose and drama, deepening their understanding of literary form, context and interpretation. At AS level, students study at least one example of each genre, while A level extends this to at least two examples per genre, ensuring both breadth and depth. A level students also study at least eight texts, including three published before 1900—one of which must be a Shakespeare play—and at least one text first published or performed after 2000. Study also includes an unseen text and may incorporate influential works in translation. Learners explore how writers shape meaning, how texts relate to one another and to literary movements, and how they are interpreted by different readers across time. Emphasis is placed on analysing the significance of social, historical and cultural context, while encouraging critical engagement and meaningful connections across a wide range of substantial literary texts.
